Moving is always a challenge, no matter how prepared you are. However, add on to the move that you are moving into a new state, which is a significant distance from you are currently, and you have a whole set of circumstances you might not be prepared for. By creating a check-list, you can make long-distance moving go as smoothly as possible.
The best place to begin is to do some research about moving companies who can assist you with your move. For example, if you're moving across the state, you will possibly choose a different mover than you would choose if you were going cross-country. Local movers are fine for "local" moves, but if you're long distance moving, you will want to call on the expertise of a national moving company.
These companies know what it takes to conduct long-distance moving. They have the skill and expertise to get your belongings to your new home and in a timely manner. If needed, you can enlist the help to pack your belongings, as well. They take extra care and time to pack your items securely, as to not obtain any damage during the move itself.
So, the movers are busy and taking care of the packing, routing, timeline, etc. What can you do to prepare for long distance moving? First, take an inventory of all your items. Are there things in the home, specifically in the storage areas, where things are piling up? Maybe you have "spare" lamps, throw pillows, artwork, etc. in several areas of you home. If this is the case, consider donating these items to a local charity. If you currently aren't using them, it doesn't make much sense packing them up and moving them across the country.
Second, prepare your wardrobe. Are you moving to a different climate? If so, you many need to purge or purchase items to fit your new locale. For example, if you're moving from Connecticut to Redmond, you may not need the winter coats, hats and boots you've acquired over the years. You can always keep one set of everything, but there will likely not be a need for several sets. On the other hand, if you're moving from Phoenix to Michigan, you may need to purchase a few items, especially if you're moving during a season of inclement weather.
Third, prepare children the long-distance move, as well. Make sure you determine the best and safest option for your family. Just because your belongings will be a making a slow road-trip to your new home doesn't mean the rest of your family has to, as well. Check into flying everyone to your new destination, but know when your belongings will be arriving. For example, if you know that the moving truck won't be arriving until Thursday, a possibility might be to have your family arrive on Wednesday evening. Make it an event. Check into a hotel with a swimming pool and have your family celebrate their first night in their new city with swimming, a dinner out and movie night. That way, you're there to greet the truck on Thursday, but took a fairly painless plane ride to get there.
Finally, get acquainted with your new home state. Do some research to find out the state bird, the governor's name, any local or national attractions it may host. All these things will help make a long-distance move a smoother transition for everyone in the family.
Of course, all this change can be stressful on you and your family. But, if you keep a good attitude and enlist the help of a trusted moving company, you and your family will appreciate that long distance moving can be an adventure and learn to love your new home in no time.
